New technologies and their implications for security and geopolitics

Recent advances in AI, driven by increased computing power, data and improved learning algorithms, are leading to breakthroughs such as Deepmind's Alpha algorithms or OpenAI's ChatGPT. The technology is spreading rapidly among states and non-state actors, increasing the risks of misuse and malicious use. At the same time, digitalisation is changing global power structures: a technological bipolarity is emerging between the US and China, which increases the risk of global decoupling in a polarised world.

Head of Global and Emerging Risks, Geneva Center for Security Policy GCSP

Rickli heads the Global and Emerging Risks Department at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy in Geneva. He is also co-chair of the Emerging Security Challenges Working Group of the NATO Partnership for Peace Consortium (PFPC) and co-curator of the International Security Map of the World Economic Forum's Strategic Intelligence Platform. He also represents the GCSP in the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons. He holds a PhD from the University of Oxford.
